(Fonte: Vents Magazine) – Gliding out of the silence with an angelic glow, the gentle melody that opens up the aptly-titled “Endless,” from none other than Still G & Slapy, hypnotizes us with its harmonic tonality, depth of unspoken emotion and undying virtuosity. It’s only a sample of what’s to come in the next few minutes of play, but it’s more than enough to get us spellbound and aching to hear more. Still G & Slapy rap in their native Italian, their words sliding into the toned instrumentation in the background as if the two entities were always meant to be joined together in a beautiful sonic marriage.
There’s nothing to stop them from going as hard at the verses as they see fit, but they don’t give in to the liberal framework of a jaded mainstream rap style here. Instead, they adopt a restrained, cerebral approach to the lyrics and allow the vicious swing guiding the beats to lead the way in this uncompromising, gorgeous fusion of funk, contemporary hip-hop and urban pop.
A lot of collaborations in this genre of music feel more like duels than they do collective efforts between two likeminded artists. There have been countless occasions in the last three months alone where I’ve been shown talent from across the world that suffered from this competitive nature, but that isn’t the case with Still G & Slapy in “Endless.” Rather than vying for our attention, warring for dominance in the center stage of the song, they flat out embrace the experimental in this track and work to bring out the best in each other’s skillsets. For every time that Still G gets indulgent with his words, Slapy is there to pull us back into an even-handed flow, and just when it feels like the pressure is about to burst at the seams in the chorus, they come together for a bold harmony that has no equal in the recent singles out of the American and European scenes. These guys know the ins and outs of their abilities, and they’re operating more like a dedicated rock n’ roll outfit in this song than they are two musicians trying to make a name for themselves on an exclusively independent front.
I was only somewhat familiar with these two before, but I’m very eager to hear more from Still G & Slapy in the future. “Endless” teases us with a melodicism that I simply cannot get enough of. If they bring this sound with them to the United States, it’ll be hard to slow down the momentum that they’ll ultimately pick up. These slick beats are both surreal and cutting, and they appeal to the sensibilities of millennial audiences while adhering to the strict parameters of the old school at the same time – which, in and of itself, is not an easy feat to accomplish, even for the most talented of artists in the industry today. They’ve still got some room to grow into their style together, but let it be known that as of now, this summer belongs to Still G & Slapy, and moreover, the emerging generation of rappers that they wholeheartedly represent with their music.
